As DeSoto Independent School District sets its goals for the next five years, it is focused on restoring community trust through transparency, collaboration, and a shared vision. Community listening sessions will provide residents with the opportunity to voice their concerns, expectations, and desires, helping to shape the future of both students and the community.

DeSoto ISD’s Board of Trustees shares their vision for the district in a recent Dallas Morning News Op-ed, discussing how their collaborative initiatives will benefit the surrounding community.

In May 2022, Dr. Usamah Rodgers was appointed superintendent of DeSoto ISD, following a period of mismanagement that led the Texas Education Agency to take control of the district. Previously, the district struggled with budget issues, resulting in staff and school cuts that diminished community support. Since her appointment, Superintendent Rodgers has made it a priority to rebuild trust through community engagement.

Inspired by these conversations, Rodgers introduced the concept of “The Triple A” – academics, arts, and athletics. These areas were identified by the community as being negatively impacted in previous years, making them central to the district’s recovery efforts.

As the Board of Trustees and Superintendent Rodgers continue their collaboration with the community, they are aligning their goals with Texas House Bill 3, which promotes school finance reform and ensures that district objectives are specific, measurable, and focused on achieving the best outcomes for students.

These ongoing conversations aim to identify key investments that will enhance facilities, update technology, and improve resources, all of which directly support students' learning experiences. These efforts are crucial to ensuring DeSoto ISD schools meet the evolving needs of students and the community.

The district is at a pivotal moment in its history, and DeSoto ISD is using this opportunity to engage the community in shaping the future direction of its schools. The listening sessions will continue to refine goals and ensure that every decision reflects the values and priorities of the community.

This process is just the beginning. Through continued dialogue, the district is laying the foundation for a sustainable future, keeping the community at the heart of every decision and ensuring that students are prepared for an ever-changing world.
